cylinder testing

Okay- head is off. Definitely needs valve work. Anyone got any good pointers on how to check the cylinders and rings without removing the block? Thanks!

You can check the bore for wear and any step at the top and for signs of scoring down the bore. But you wiill need to remove the pistoms to truely get an idea of their condition and piston ring and groove wear. In which case you may as well remove the engine.

Mission creep !

I was considering building a plate of aluminium for a single cylinder, two ports, one for an air fitting and one for a leak down guage. Thoughts?

Worth a try. Should tell you if you have broken rings at least if one or two cylinders different from the others. If all cylinders the same it will be hard to tell how much is normal and how much is excessive wear but combined with bore measurements and inspection for scoring and a top ridge it should all help decide whether you need to pull the pistons for a closer look.
