You will still need a fan switch & fan.

Imagine standing in traffic in Summer, the thermostat may be wide open but you will need the fan to push air through the radiator

Pretty sure he means adjustable fan controller. Hope so at least.

When my Otter switch gave me trouble, I decided to get rid of it as I was surprised at the price of a new one. Having removed it, I cut a small piece of thin brass sheet and sweated it over the hole left by the Otter switch. I used a plumber's flux & solder and a gas torch with a soldering attachment. - a sort of clip on thick copper rod. I didn't want to use the gas flame direct on the top radiator tank, for fear of melting the solder that attaches it to the radiator core.
Alternatively, you could just leave the old Otter unit in place. I felt it was a possible weak point, as the standard arrangement looks at risk of popping out to me. Some people wire them in for safety

This is what sits in the Otter position in my rad -

Image

No idea how it's fixed in as the previous owner did it but it's not moved or leaked in 30yrs.

I have an old Kenlowe ajustable thermostat in the top hose but I'm not convinced that, with the hose being the highest point in the std Lotus cooling set up, it's the best place to have it. Any drop in the water level and the measuring point is in air rather than water. It's been on my to do list for many years to sort something out but in the meantime my workaround has been a manual switch for the fan. I push the button when the temp rises :)
