Engine questions???

Reassembly and I have some questions. First off, I wondering if there is a different head gasket available other than the expensive 'Cometic'. I've never had good luck with the copper and steel sandwich gaskets on other engines and my engine had been seeping coolant with the original sandwich gasket.
Second was wondering if anyone has experimented with a different rope rear crank seal. There has been Teflon valve stem packing material available for decade's and I would think it a superior material.
Finally, since I'm too lazy to look it up, would the recommended torque on the 125E rods be 40 ft lbs.
Kurt.

Cometic also makes a composition gasket as well their MLS multi layer metal gasket. As I recall it's not listed on their web site and I needed to call them to get it. I used the composition gasket to avoid leaks and have had no problem. Connecting rod bolts in the shop manual show 44 - 46 ftlb.

Dave Bean has composition gaskets in different thicknesses.

Modern Kevlar / graphite pump shaft packing material that is designed for sealing spinning high speed shafts is probably your best option. The teflon valve stem packing is designed for sealing very slow moving valve stems and may not withstand the friction of a high speed shaft well.
Keith at the Yahoo group "vintagetechnologygarage" has tried different materials and can probably give you some more detailed advice.
cheers

Kurt,
I am also not happy to use the original head gasket.
Did you find a supplier of cosmetic composition head gaskets for the twin cam engine?
