Static timing

Dear All
The Good Book gives figures for static timing varying from 5 to 12 degrees BTDC,now I know that this is a compromise to overcome (maybe) the shortcomings of the distributor and give correct spark timing through the rev range...but when fitted with EFI this can be controlled a lot easier...
The question is what would be the best static timing for starting the engine?
Thanks
John
