noisy tappets

After taking some good advice and soaking bores in WD40 and oil compression on 3 and 4 jumped from 110 to 170 each, all running between 165 - 170. I have therefore taken decision not to take head off just yet. In speaking with my father the engine was completley rebuilt less than 800 miles ago with head redone and new sleeves etc in block.

With other work complete car sat running, getting better quite litterally by the second for 10 mins, however still lots of what i beleive to be tappet rattle.

Does any have a very simple guide to setting valve timing with engine cold.

My plan is to get this done first, finally sort of carb issue, oil change and then assess what to do next.
