S1 Crank seal??

PostPost by: nomad » Sat Nov 30, 2013 2:33 pm

I've had my engine tore down for some time and have been agonizing over what to do with my crankshaft. The crank is turned 0.010 under and looks to be perfect except for a spot that has corroded on the rope seal face. :(
I thought I would just change over to the 6 bolt crank but parts to do that are hard to come by so now I am thinking of staying with the 4 bolt and am wondering what this group would do.

The bad spot is about 3/8" long and I would guess at least 0.010 deep. Should I just have the seal area ground down to be rid of it or should i just have it polished and not worry about it? Or should I have it filled in with weld? Don't know if that's possible or advised on a iron crank.

I would think that a rope seal could accommodate an undersized crank. What think yee??

I would have it ground down as you suggest. The rope seals are very tight so would fill the space but don't polish out a shallow place or the oil will certainly find the gap as the rope goes hard.

I had a thrust washer disintegrate and wear 0.040" off the crank face and only an aerospace company would metal fill it; the total cost with grinding it flat again was ?500.

Dont forget that the flywheel fits on the end so you cant grind down the end section.

Meg, I've had a steel crank welded and reground on the thrust face not long ago for considerably less than your experience but the iron crank, I think, is another matter.

Rohan, the 4 bolt crank seal runs on a different flat then the 6 bolt crank [I'm sure you know that] so hopefully I can keep the regrind shop away from there.
Regrinding the seal face on the 6 bolt would be the same as the fly wheel flange.

If anyone could set me up with the 6 bolt setup it would be nice but I am used to leaky brit vehicles as is my wife who has banned them from the garage. Most of my toys reside in my shop.
