Rope seal question

This is my first "rope seal" motor and I need some advice. Getting ready to install the pan, I have the two cork material gaskets that run the length of the oil pan. Do the ends of the rope seal mate to each other? (pan and block). It they do, that would mean the cork gasket would need to be trimmed at the edge of the rope seal material? I am pretty sure the end of the cork pan gasket is not sandwiched between the rope seal ends. Comments, advice, knowledge??
