Steel Lotus crank identification

PostPost by: promotor » Fri May 31, 2013 9:25 am

I have a steel twincam crank that I'm trying to identify the manufacturer of - it doesn't have a name on it, just some letters and numbers so it's a bit of a mystery.

Does anyone recognise this crank? I have a feeling it could be Holbay or Cosworth but not entirely sure!!

Any help would be great.

Here it is:

Hi Al

There's a company in Slough called Phoenix Crankshafts who have been manufacturing steel crankshafts since the early 1980s. Although they seem to specialize more in producing cranks for the vintage car market they have also supplied race crankshafts for Ford and Lotus engines over the years. Perhaps this is one of theirs.

Hi Nick.

That certainly makes sense and I have to say that is some good work from you Sir!!

I'm going to send them a message with the details of the crank to see what they say!!

Cheers!

It's still possible it could be Holbay as I've had a response back from Pheonix Crankshafts :

"Sorry can not help you as this is not one of our crankshafts as we do not stamp our crankshafts or use that type of fastener to block of oilways"

So the quest for knowledge continues! It's funny that the response mentions the oilway blockers as that is mainly what has lead me to believe it could be Cosworth or Holbay as they are quite a distinctive feature!

Hi I just seen this thread, it looks a lot like the crank in my engine. Mine is a Farndon, try mailing the pictures to them.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the response. I've just seen your other post regarding block relieving - some serious work there!

It does indeed look similar to mine - doubt I'd ever be so lucky for it to be a Farndon one!
I did get a response from an engine builder that the crankshaft is a Performance Crankshafts - quite an old company apparently who are no longer in business!

More details about the long stroke engine please!!
