Sump bolts

PostPost by: Tonyw » Sun Feb 10, 2013 2:25 pm

Hi all,

I have been trying to resolve an oil leak from my sump gasket, I was loathe to tighten the bolts to much as I did not want to distort the gasket however as the leak was now resembling a major oil slick I thought I would have another go at them. When I got under the car with my trusty 1/4 drive socket set I found the I could not tighten the bolts anymore......it seems that when I purchased a complete engine bolt set of Ebay some years ago the bolts for the sump were two threads to long and were bottoming out and not allowing the gasket to crush enough I thought I would share this with you all and of course not all of the sump gasket bolts go into a blind hole.

You would be best advised to use cap screws. IIRC they are 3/4" long. If you find they are too long for the blind holes, add another washer, or so.
