Cam chain ramp position

OK, so bolting on the front outer cover to the engine. The flat 7.5 inch cam chain ramp was removed for cleaning and pressing out the old stuck water pump. One end of the ramp is a bit longer than the other. Looking at the book it appears that the longer end goes toward the top of the motor and sticks out about 1.5 inches above the cover surface. Is that correct? Seems "fairly" clear in the manual but it is hours of work if I am mistaken. Expert comments?

If you don't get an earlier reply, I'll pop down to my garage tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) and measure how much it sticks up. (my head is off).

Don't forget to put loctite on the conical screws that hold that guide in. I forgot to do so & the worry that one of those screws might come out in future is probably going to cause me to go to the ftrouble of taking the front cover off all over again.

Hi Bill
You can get a low viscosity loctite that will wick in to the threads and lock them up without removal you should be able to apply it from the outside as the holes usually go all the way through the casting.

I am a long way from my garage as currently in Singapore and heading for the USA so cant check the actual orientation of the chain guide but sticking up about 1.5 inches sounds about right to me. If i recall correctly it cant be fitted the wrong way around as it fouls the crank sprocket if put upside down ?

Unfortunately a very very quick business trip - I have been away for a week in Jakarta and Singapore and now I fly into Savannah Georgia on Wednesday around midnight, 2 days work thrusday and friday and I fly home friday night getting back to Melbourne on Sunday afternoon to start work again on Monday - no rest for the wicked.

One day i hope to have more leisurely trip to the USA and Uk and catch up and share a beer or wine with a few listers

This post concerned my slightly as I had the head off a few weeks ago and don't remember the guide sticking up like this. I've checked against a photo I took and mine looks to be level with the top of the front cover. If Rohan is correct and the guide can't be fitted the wrong way up, I have to conclude that it has broken off or been removed by a PO. Question is what is the impact ? Interestingly I do have a light metallic rattle under load that I've been unable to trace. Anyone know if the design was changed at some point - mine is a 1972 big valve engine. Hope I don't have to dismantle it all again.

Some people take the top off the guide as it means you can easily drop the head straight down on a couple of guide studs which makes positioning it and the head gasket easier. If using ARP head studs you can fit the studs first and just drop the gasket and head straight on and pull it off again without having to pull the studs i have seen it done with no apparent ill affects though I have never done it myself.
