using oil and compression test readings

My engine is using oil at about 1 pint in 250 miles [leaks a bit but have been told that a visible wisp can be seen out the exhaust].
I did a compression test with the engine warm and it showed 200-210 on all cylinders; thought this was high so I bought another gauge which read the same; I checked the cam timing and measured the base circle of a few lobes at about 1.15" [big valve engine]. Are there any reasons other than the head having been heavily shaved? PS I had the head off to do a water pump last year but didn't look too closely but noted that the pistons looked standard height +.020. The engine has good torque but doesn't rev as well as I remember my other lotus in the past. Any help or thoughts appreciated, cheers, John.

The last two times I measured the compression on my big valve engine it was in the region of 220, so I don't think there's anything particularly unusual about your readings. (Though my head has also been skimmed a couple of times at least. I hope not too much.)
