Fitting the Sump.

Help,
I thought this would be an easy job, but I have fitted the sump this morning tightening the bolts down gradually. I have it torqued down to 6 lbs ft, but the gasket has squeezed out and split. The gasket set came from QED and the manual says 6?8 lds ft, the gaskets shouldn?t squeeze out like this should they?
Thanks in advance
Mark

Mark, it's possible the bolts (using plural because it looks the one nearest the crank seal is doing the same) didn't line up with the hole in the gasket and hence, tore the gasket, making it easier to squeeze out.

Mark,
It is better done in two stage. Glue it to the pan and let it rest over night. Only nip enough to hold it in place. Then, the next day, remove and apply your sealer and fit back to the block. There is not much strength in the gasket material and sealant on both sides casues it to migrate outwards. This tends not to happen if it is set on the lower side first.
I think Steveww who used to post has a lot on it in the archives.
