Early (short) and late (long) cartridge oil filters

PostPost by: S Carlson » Fri Apr 29, 2011 12:57 am

I have a very early Elan S2, with the very short cartridge-style oil filter on the pump. I recently got around to pulling the remainder of parts off a junk Elan chassis I came across (yeah, I'm that lucky) and noticed it had a longer cartridge-type oil filter. I want to know if I can change just the filter cartridge and bolt to the longer style without changing the pump itself. I am pretty sure the pump on this parts-car is seized anyway, but I grabbed the filter cartridge just in case.

Thanks!

As long as it fits and seals ok it should make no difference to the pump operation. The pump just "sees" it as a resistance in the line, same as any other resistance. 8)

Thanks! I'll try next oil change and resurrect this thread to report how it went.

I just looked at the pump castings and determined that the long and short cartridges are interchangeable, so I figured I'd post here for the archives' sake.

Thanks :)
