Camshafts Giveaway

PostPost by: adigra » Mon Jan 17, 2011 5:28 am

Hi guys,

Due to all the positive changes on the forum, as well as a bit of a thank you to all of the help I've received over the last couple of years, I have some spare parts I thought some of you might find useful. I will give them away to regular members (so they go to someone who won't turn around and sell them) who can use them to keep these wonderful cars going.

I have two sets of camshafts, S/E and Sprint.

The Sprint ones (two rings) I bought on ebay and one has a small nick (see attached photo) which should have no effect on its performance. I have paid way too much, but I didn't at the time know about the nick and I really don't want the hassle of trying to sell them (I did try to recover some of the costs a while ago, but to no avail. And in reality have received more than ten times their worth in advice from this forum). I was in fact more than happy to use them until I went down the 420 route. They appear to be in really good nick, but I make no guarantees. They are free for either pickup in Leeds or Ilkley (West Yorkshire), or I will mail them at your cost.

The other set are the S/E (one ring) which came out of my engine during the recent rebuild. They look good, and performed great, but I have not measured them and I would assume they aren't "as new". Again, they are free for pickup, or mailed at your cost, same as above.

And finally, this one is possibly not as desirable, but again someone might find it useful. A complete exhaust manifold, 34mm, mild steel and rusty, with a few small holes just where the Y piece fits. It's a small welding job and they look like they would clean up well and be quite usable. To be honest I was going to throw it away, but it just looks too good and solid and a shame to throw out, but I will never use it. This one is for pickup only as I have no idea how to mail it.

Anyhow, if you want any of it please post in here, and if you've been a member for more than a few days, state your preference and you can have any of the above. If no one wants anything I won't be offended. The stuff has value so it's not junk I'm trying to get rid of (the tip is for that), but I'd rather it get used than sit in the garage.

Regards,
Adi

Adi,
I'm on the other side of the World, and don't need what you're offering, but just like to let you know that I think it's a nice gesture to not want to get the last cent out of a "genuine Lotus part".
Hopefully you might start a trend!

Cheers
Ralph.

Richard, the Sprint cams are yours. I'll PM later today.

Ralph, thank you for that. I might be foolish, but I like the idea of making someone happy. I really dislike selling used stuff, it's a thankless task to me, and the parts are doing no one any good sitting in boxes, so if they make another Elan a better car I will be very happy indeed.

Besides, on the BBC they say today is the most depressing day of the year, the fact Richard wants the cams has already brightened it up for me!

Hi Adi, If no one has asked, I would be interested in the manifold. The one on my plus 2 is a bit ratty.

Thanks Mike

Nice way to do it - well done!

It would be nice to have a "Lotus Freecycle" & "Lotus Tool Loan" if we could just agree to the "don't sell it for a profit" idea......

Adi,

What a brilliant post, you are a credit to this brilliant forum!

I can't help notice that there a few a names on here who only pop up when the are either selling something or are looking for something (to sell on Ebay :?: ) and it is so refreshing to see a post like this.

I used to inhabit the Lotus Seven forum before I left after selling the Seven and getting fed up with all the personal bickering and ego trippers on there. One good thing however was that the forum had a preferred charity and many parts were circulated around the members of the club by making donations to the charity in lieue of payment. I think this would be a great thing to do on Elan.Net too.

Well done!

Adam, sorry, the cams went via a PM earlier.

Mike, you can have the manifold. Let me know when you wanted to pick it up.

Bruce, I always like the idea of "pass it forward" within communities, but unfortunately it always seems to falter. The Elan is a fun hobby for me and starts stressing me out if I start thinking about it and its parts in monetary terms.

Jon, thank you. The charity idea is a good one and much like Richard above the other member via PM offered to donate to a charity.

Count me in! V happy to loan out tools to 'members'...

Valve shims and mic' anyone? Need a shim ground to size? Valve lifter? airflow meter? helicoil kits various? Taps / Dies/ drills? etc etc etc....

I will even do some work for you FOC too. Helicoiling for eg. Or riv nut fitting etc etc...

Please feel free to ask. If I have and its here you are welcome. I sent a dummy lay-shaft to one of our guys in Ireland (how often do you use one of them?) and lamp parts to an American forum member. Just a small charity donation is all that's asked...

Local guys are even welcome to come and use my 4 post lift and use my tools too. Need to finish gearbox conversion 1st though..

Great idea... Here to help!!

Thanks Adi, I will PM you. It is a great gesture. I am very happy to make a donation to charity.

Re: Tooling bits and pieces and help. It is not a bad idea to just ask on the forum.
Lots of us buy tooling and just use them once. It may be years before we us them again.

I have been a member since 2003 and have had some great help and met some really decent people. I have some more good friends now who I keep in touch with. I am not a great poster and have to be sure before I commit to post. I have been really impressed with direct replies to problems I have had plus private message replies.
That?s another comment; quite a lot goes on behind the scenes with actual help and offers of help on the private messages.

Great forum.

Mike :D
