engine Oil leaks on 1966 S3

Hi Everyone

I'm told that this version of the twincam engine employed rope seals on the crank, and that they were not very effective resulting in leaks. Is this just something I have to accept (that goes with this version of the engine)?

It wouldn't be any better with the later seals in the long term as it would leak from other places. When new, the rope seal arrangement is satisfactory. Opinion is divided into those that would prefer modern standards of cleanliness and the "they all do that" camp. I'm in the latter although I don't believe that they should leave a pool of oil where they stand, but a drip would not concern me. Incidentally the garage floor is clean under mine although there is a healthy covering of oil on the sump. Stick with what you've got - its original.
