Cam Cover

Hi All

Has anyone had the gasket face on a cam cover skimmed to return it to a flat condition? Aftyer trying a cometic cam cover gasket I find that my cover is not flat enough to allow it to seal adequately. There is some distortion (about 15 - 20 thou) on the front edge of the cover.

If so any recomendations for a suitable machine shop?

Should be a fairly straightforward job for any Machine shop with a Milling Machine with sufficient Table movement.
I'm planning to get a Cam Cover Casting done, but here in Germany.
Sometime there was mention of a Guy either in Coleshill or Shustoke who makes/machines posh Twincam bits.

Is the "Cometic" seal a multi-layer Steel type of Gasket that's been discussed on here in the past?
If so it would be interesting to hear other users comments on their experiences.
The Stud/Hole spacing for clamping the Cover to the Head are IMHO, to say the least marginal & I don't think they would provide the required, even clamping forces for a pressed steel Gasket.

I hope you'll post the results, as & when.

Yes it is the gasget that has been discussed previously. It consists of an aluminium backing sandwiched between two layers of rubber. The overall thicknes is less than 1mm so the rubber thickness is small and certainly not thick (or soft) enough to take up the 15 thou variation I have. (Sorry for the interchange of units but I am finding muyself increasingly ambidextrous in that area)

When I was studying I had to cope with FPS; MKS & ISO all within the same period; I think that's what made me the retard that I am.
I started off left handed & still am :lol: :lol: :lol:

For me, it works well, I have no leaks from the cover for the first time ever.

Don't forget that you always have the option of RTV only (no gasket) instead of machining the cover.

I had my cam cover milled flat by a local machinist. The cover was warped a good 1/8". I also tried the Cometic Thin, reuseable cam cover gasket. Could not get it to stop leaking. Silicone would have done the trick but I went back to using cork. Also changed from using the rubber sealed cam nut gaskets to a fiber washer and haven't had any leaks around the bolts. Sometimes the "D" seals stick up above the sealing surface of the head too much, so I use a belt sander( holding the "D" seal flat against the belt by hand...not on the cyl. head) and remove enough of the flat to allow proper compression of the D seal and cam cover gasket. Reinstall adding a smear of silicone to the bottom of the D seal and letting it harden befor torquing the cam cover has eliminated any oil leaks from the cam cover....for a while......

geez guys while your adding some silicone to the D rubbers run a small bead around the cam cover -add the gasket -then set it gasket side down on a flat surface WITH A PHONE BOOK ON TOP ----goes as flat as my girl friends chest -----add a bit of oil to the head sealing surface and you can reuse the gasket time after time ----and it will not leak ----[ 10 torque pounds on the nuts only and use a washer please -----] ----ed

So now the job's done, all the sealing surfaces milled flat, stud holes drilled, painted & Monza filler cap fitted.
I'm pleased with it although my Photos don't really do it justice.
My thanks to the kind member who sold me the casting.
I think that most will agree that this is a very unusual Cam Cover. :wink:

I thought for sure you were working up a cam cover with the BMW logo, but Cosworth is a nice touch.
