Plug Gap

A thought occurred to me the while adjusting the plugs on my Dodge minivan. The book recommends a gap of .050". My Ford Fairmont also had a gap of .050". What do these cars have in common? They both came from the factory equipped with electronic ignition.
As the recommended gap of .050" is twice that of the recommended gap for the Elan, I'm wondering if the gap on the Elan plugs should be increased when you upgrade to electronic ignition. Does this make sense?
