Oil Recommendation for '74 +2S?

anyone have an opinion on what oil I SHOULD use in my '74 +2/130 (a little under 30,000 miles) I'm loathe to chuck in any old cheap sludge from Wilco. Or is that what everyone else uses?
ALSO - I need to get my 5-speed gearbox sorted as syncromesh is non-existent in 2nd (and fairly graunchy in 4th) Anyone have a good spare? What should I be looking to pay for one, or to get a rebuild?

It's a vote for Duckhams from me as well. Holds better oil pressure than GTX when hot, it's green and it smells good! Synthetics are undoubtedly very good, but will find and magnify any leakey areas.
I get mine from this bloke...delivered in a day or two:

Call Sue Miller about your box. I wouldn't bother buying a 2nd hand one...it will be the same as yours. Unless you buy it, recondition it and swap at your leisure. That may make some sense. Don't pay more than ?300 for one though, unless it has an invoice for a recent reconditioning.

I have always used Valvoline racing 20w50, but any decent quality/branded 20w50 as mentioned by previous posters. If you want some, your local Central Auto Supplies should stock it. (there are very few Valvoline stockists, hence the plug)

Halfords own brand oil used to be supplied by Comma oils, not sure about these days though.
