Cold start solenoid

PostPost by: jimbo » Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:31 am

Mine seems to have got very 'sticky' such that the car wont start unless I pop the bonnet and give it some manual encouragement. Is this a serviceable item or should I just order a new one?

Thanks,

James

It seems to 'free off' by repeated pressing of the red plastic cover such that it will then start on the key. I figured it was the internals seizing rather than an earthing problem as the 'button' is incredibly stiff to push for the first couple of goes and then it frees off a little.

Am I missing something? :?

James,
Paul Matty sells the push-button type solenoid about 25 pounds.

Thanks Colin. I was aware of that. I just wondered if it was worth spedning the time stripping the existing one down. :?

If it's the same as mine half an hour spent drilling the rivets out and cleaning it not only fixes it but gives one a warm glow inside....

The solenoid has been playing up on my Elan plus 2 so thought I would follow John's advice and take it apart and clean it up. Let's face it, most of the time with something like this you can be no worse off if a repair doesn't work. Anyway, for those that haven't tackled this job before, here are a few pictures to show how easy it is.
Cheers
Andy

Solenoid ready to go back on car, the epoxy is because I was a little too enthusiatic making a hole through the solder for the coil wire so had to secure the tag back in place
