Pump housing...

Whilst changing the cam sprockets to verniers I decided to change the timing chain to be on the safe side... Although the pump was working ok and had no leaks I then got sucked into, might as well change the pump/seals whilst the front cover is off (I can hear the saying now... if its not broken, leave it alone!). I discovered the pump housing to be a bit naff (photo), is this a common sight? I would rather not go for the modular kit at the moment (another day)... from peoples experience will this seal again ok with the repair kit an a good quality RTV?

Doug,
Your front cover looks worse than most I have seen with regard to the water pump seating areas. I wonder if you might have flow restrictions that might lead to cavitation in this area. You are not in the league of owners who should leave well enough alone. (Well I assume you had a compelling reason to go to vernier-adjustment cam sprockets.) Changing cam sprockets demands a new chain unless it was changed very recently. Of course that means removal of the front cover and replacement of the o-ring seals in the insert which bridges the front cover and it's backing plate. The brass sleeve and o-ring on the top left of your image are a mystery. I doubt very much that these items are original and suggest previous attempts to resolve corrosion problems.

Hello, Doug.
I currently have a spare front cover with a new water pump fitted by Burton Power (they supplied the cover too) - see thread "Water Pump Woes". I am currently going down the replaceable cover route.
The pump is currently leaking, but I strongly suspect that it is the way the pump was fitted (using grease rather than sealant for the seal) rather than poor condition of the cover that is causing the trouble.
I cannot dismantle the pump, but you are welcome to take it apart and assess it (I am in Writtle). We can agree a price for it if you are happy to proceed.
E-mail me on this website if you are interested.
Dave Chapman.
