Filing piston rings

PostPost by: tdafforn » Mon Apr 23, 2007 8:29 am

Hi guys,
turned the corner on the 711m twink build. All the machining has been done, now I need to do a bit of fettling. First off, it looks as though the ring gaps are a little tight (perhaps 0.05-0.08mm too tight according to the Miles Wilkins book).
I am assuming that I need to file them.
Any tips?
I was assuming that holding them in some soft jaws on a vice and filing them with a needle file along the longer axis of the ring was the best approach. Then cleaning up any burs..
Is this OK?

Thats pretty much what I do, I use a small fine flat file and clean up the edges with a fine wet and dry abrasive paper.
