Cords Piston rings

I have recently dismantled my twin cam due to smoke and low compressions. As the bores and pistons (.020" over) are in pretty good order, I'm going to flex hone the bore and fit new rings.

I have purchased some Cords Rings on ebay, and they are not quite the same as the ones that were fitted, as shown in the manual.

The second and third rings are stepped cast iron and oil control rings respectively, so far so good.

The top ring however is a two-layer steel arrangement with two narrow steel rings which butt against each other at the cylinder wall and splay to fill the piston groove. This is not like the chrome compression ring that was previously fitted.

All the clearances (ring gap in bore and ring gap in piston groove) are spot on. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with these two layer rings?

Hi going on memory chords were a company that specialised in supply of piston rings to take up worn bores and pistons, a well known name in the 60s, i think another was wellworth i have a set just as you describe and they were supplied for a worn engine, how well the will perform in a twincam i dont know

That's right, They were also reputed to cause accelerated bore wear. They were designed to give a worn engine another lease of life at low cost.

FWIW I would fit a set of new conventional rings if you are looking for a cheap fix. The twink block is too valuable to do otherwise.
