Hi all,
What sort of circlips are usually used on lotus pistons? wire or pressed steel?

Old style is wire. I don't know about newer ones, but I think there was a thread on this subject a couple of weeks ago.

It was me a couple of weeks ago. To my knowledge they are small section (round) wire type. I have not looked under a magnifying glass (old fart) but they seem to sit very deep in what appears to be a circular section groove.

I checked with QED and they sent me wire type round section that were massive in cross section. Had no other type in wire. I talked to P Matties and they said that the engineer type flat section one was the only one they had.

I would think that Miles Wilkins (is it Fibreglass services?) would be the man to know about these details as I beleive he has lots sets of stadard Lotus pistions. Plus he has builts stacks.

I bought the pistons from Miles Wilkins, and he told me that there were know circlips. I asked him where he gets them from and he said from old used pistons.
I though it was worth a pop as a set of 4 of his pistons was less than a single new piston from any of the other usual suspects.
So I suppose that is my answer.
Now all I need to do is to make sure I get the old ones out of my current engine without "pinging" them into tomorrow!

PS I bet QED etc have tonnes of old circlips from old engines but I bet they wouldn't sell them on!

Tim,

Try removing the circlips with the piston inside a clear plastic bag.
Just a thought.

Stuart.
