Engine running on

PostPost by: gsminors » Mon May 08, 2006 11:04 pm

When my engine is warm the engine will run on after the ignition is turned off. I have a 69 Elan +2 with stromberg carbs. The engine is not over heating and will run as soon as it gets warm. Any ideas what I can check to cure this. thanks. P.S. just looked at the spark plugs NGK BP7ES and they look good, not very sooty as all.

It could be oil from the guides or rings getting in to the cylinder causing dieseling. It could be coke build up. It could be tick over set too high.....

The first place to start is a good tune up, make sure everything is as it should be.

Retarded timing and/or idle speed (as mentioned) too high.....sticking linkage/cable???....... use highest octain fuel available.

Strombergs due to their design can produce workable air fuel ratios at extremely low flow rates. A small hot spot in the engine can produce a workable ignition source. This combination often produces engines with strombergs that run on. I have experienced it in lots of engines running strombergs over the years.

I ahev the same problem and have yet not fixed it but I am hopefull I will.
changed sparkplugs from NGKBP7ES to NGKBP5ES, checked compression, checked ignition  timing, checked vacium take-of for the brake booster, reset fuel level in the carbs, changed to other needles etc.. and it still runs on.
I have some play in the carb butterfly shafts and that could be it.
I will replace the strombergs with a pair of NOS SU carbs I just bought and see if that solves this problem.
Although I think my engine is very clean I might put some cleaning stuff through the fuel system to clean any carbon deposits in the head which could pre ignite and cause the engine to run on.
I am keen to hear how you will solve the problem.
best of luck

I don't want to mess around too much with the engine because it really goes very well with no other problems. I will run it this summer and put up with the run on. When the winter comes I will take the head off and give the engine a good tune up. I am very pleased with the Elan goes very well.

Hi,

I finally cured my run-on problem by putting some Wynn's carb-engine cleaning stuff in the fuel tank. I have never used any additives and I was very sceptical about the results. It has however cured my run-on so I thought I would share this with you. Despite the bad reputation stromberg engines have I am very happy with the results and performance of my engine.
cheers
