Lotus Elan

fuel gauge and sender

PostPost by: syrius » Wed Nov 27, 2024 10:32 am

Hi all .

We are restoring an Elan S2 and we have a problem with the new pressure gauge purchased from SJ and the sender in the tank. The pressure gauge is new and the sender is original S2 . The information given by the pressure gauge is wrong. Do you know of a problem of incompatibility between the two parts ?

Thanks in advance for your help

Regards
Serge

It is unlikely you have been supplied with a fuel gauge that matches an original S2 tank unit.
If you are happy with the look of the gauge you now have, then you need a matching tank unit, however you will also need a voltage stabilizer 10volt if not already added.
I believe original gauges are not available new and a good used working gauges are very scarce.
Also if you are still positive earth then 10 volts may be a problem.

Bonjour Serge,

you may want to check previous threads on this topic, e.g.
https://lotuselan.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=33212&start=

I understand S1/S2 (and some S3) operate with a different setup from later car, the sender issueing around 0 Ohms when the tank is empty and about 70 to 80 Ohms when the tank is full. Also, as mentionned above, using the gauge under a larger supply voltage than 10V will shift and distort the operating range.
Later cars would operate with senders providing ~30 Ohms full and ~230 Ohms empty, so moving the other way round from a variable resistor perspective.

I would not trust the supplier you got your replacement from for supplying a proper part when there is even the most remote chance of getting it wrong.

Keep it on the road !
