This is the original radio that it was fitted to my S3, is there a detail they used to fasten it behind the dash? Or, is there a plate that fits the front, it's not a standard DIN mounting. Any photos of one that's mounted would be helpful. Thanks!

Hi My Jan 67 S3 was fitted with a motorola and the mounting was 2 small brackets bolted to the radio. Radio had to be fitted to dash before fitting the dash or partly removing dash to get at the bolts.

Thanks Trevor, That's what I thought it had to have had.
Fabricating a spring clip of lighter metal with the same shape might work. Then pushing it into the dash. The standard DIN insert works the same way but there are tools that are designed to fit the front of the mount and pull the radio out.

Hi Skyarch,
It looks like the facia of the radio can be removed, and refitted once the radio is in place. It is a combination of the facia plate and the side brackets, as per Trevor’s post, that clamps the radio to the dash.
I manufactured some side plates, fitted them to the Radiomobile radio, slipped the radio through the hole sideways, manouvered it into place and put the facia back on. No need to remove the dash in my case. I have removed and replaced it several time to access the back of the dash. Have hired the ex Qantas leprechaun, who has tiny little hands, to reach in and do the behind the dash work for me.
Cheers,
Colin

Love it - never occurred to me that you could hire an ex Qantas leprechaun. Removing the front and fiddling around trying to tighten the bolts proved a job too far for me.
After all the benefit of this forum is passing on experience. Thanks and keep it up

The radio fits inside the opening, on my car, w/o taking the face plate off, the Radiomobile face plate is part of the radio and is flush with the body. There's a 67 S3 (BRG) on BAT now that has the same radio but with a mounting plate on the dash. All the plates that I have are rectangular and won't fit the Radiomobile.
Now about the leprechauns: can they find a set of control knobs and a mounting plate.... could be they're in their lost & found department. Truly a magical solution, do they make house calls?

Hi Skyarch,
Have a look at Tadpole Radios under Radio Accessories for parts for Radiomobile radios.

Cheers,
Colin.

Thanks Colin, but the Tadpole plate measures the same size as the radio, what's needed is a plate that's slightly larger than the opening on the dash.
If you look at the photo that Trevor sent it shows that there may be 2 plates on his radio, it also looks like the same plate that's on the 67 S3 on BAT, so chances are that they are original from the factory.
I also need the control knobs, which are 2 pieces on each side.
To go back to the mythical I'm searching for Unicorns here!
Looks easier to just install a Becker or Blaupuntk. Thing is this radio actually works.

Hi Skyarch,
The plate that you refer to is actually a hollow surround with a lip that fits behind the facia plate (if I recall correctly). The facia and surround are fitted once the radio, with the side brackets, is in position.
I had to buy a couple of old radios to get all the bits required.
Here is a radio that has the surround. It may or may not fit your radio.

As for the knobs, you may have to search for a used model of your radio on the internet.
Cheers,
Colin

Jeez![/quote]
