S3 dash light

PostPost by: gjz30075 » Wed Dec 21, 2022 2:34 pm

Hi all, my S3 Coupe has the dashboard light with the on/off slider switch and works fine except I
found the repro lense and chrome 'hood' doesn't fit well at all (see pic). The lense and chrome
hood are from a non switch light because I can't find a switched light. What is the source of the
switched light?

Greg,

I think your photo shows a courtesy light from an MG B.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Richard. So an MGB light is a bit wider?

OEam light for s3 was switch via a dash mounted toggle switch. The switched type is easily sourced via Holdens.

Sue Miller used to sell the switched lights
The un switched lights are also S1 number plate lamps which are exceedingly rare and if I still had my S1 Elan would offer to buy it and supply a switched lamp.

Just looked in a box of bits and I have a new unused switched lamp, you can have it for free if you could pay postage.

This switch has the slider knob on top and it works in conjunction with the three toggle switches
below it for the various modes of lighting needed. The bottom measures 4 7/8 inches across.
It has two purple/white wires and a ground.

Thanks for the tip on Holden's. They do have one for an MGB (I see Richard's thinking now) but it does not
have a ground wire (not sure how that would work with the Elan wiring) and it's out of stock. I'm
just putting the dash back in now and when the wiring is complete, I'll pull the ground wire off and see if
it works.

Lo and behold, disconnected the ground wire and the light still functions as it should, and in conjunction
with the toggle switches below it. Yea! Thanks Andy.

Greg,
You might try Kelvedon for the light. I think I purchased a couple from them to use for my S3 coupe for rear quarter interior lights. They do have the sliding switch on them, which I believe in not correct for the rear quarter courtesy lights, but that's what I bought because the ones without switches seem to not exist. Where did you find it without switch?
Cheers,
Eric

Eric, it's been a few years but I'm pretty sure they came from Ebay.
