Smith gauge dash vibration noise. Gauge/Cable?

PostPost by: Mroz » Mon Oct 31, 2022 1:31 am

My Elan Sprint was restored 1n 2017. Reconditioned Smith Gauges and new cables.

The motor is very good and at about 3500 to 4000 RPM a buzz coming off the dash. Specially when decelerating
compression.

It's bothersome and masking the nice sound of the engine.

I've isolated cable rubbing in the dash.

Is it the gauge or cable? I can't tell?

Any suggestions?

If you mean the speedo cable then I would have expected it to be related to road speed not revs.
If you mean 3500 revs in top gear then it may be the cable or the instrument. In that case I suggest that you change the speedo cable first. They don`t cost much and as it is a wearing part may be due for replacement by now anyway.
Best of luck

Would you be able to detach the cable and connect to a drill? Should be able to tell if it’s the cable that way?

A dry, worn speedo cable may make a vibrating noise at certain speeds. It may also cause the speedo needle to jump around.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.

Usually the inner cable moving/rubbing against the exterior casing.

To Insulate, i've taped some foam at various locations between the cable that may rub and amplify .

I don't have a radio. So additionally added 80 mil insulation inside the vacant radio box. The radio cavity with the wood face acts and a musical instrument box with vibrations and rattles bouncing against the fiberglass. I am particular and prefer a clean engine noise. One of the best features of a Elan is to listen to the Big value head while driving. Unnecessary vibrations and rattle at good the eliminate. Specially if all corners of the car are tight. I have not restored to a stethocope. Not looking for a Bentley experience.

I will check the exterior casting location.
