S3 wiring route.

PostPost by: davidj » Sat Jun 13, 2020 10:38 am

Good morning,

I assume this is the cable route over the rear bulkhead for an S3? There appears to be a row of self tap screws in the fibreglass to hold the cables. Does anyone have any photos of the cables inside the boot? I guess the lights cables run in the gap between the petrol tank and the bulkhead, using the chassis fixing as an earth?

Thanks in advance

David

Hi David,
On my S4 DHC, the cabling goes over the top of the L/H suspension turret, and underneath the hood tray. The boot wiring harness (separate harness for S4) is then connected. One section then disappears into the left hand hollow section of the boot lid to feed the number plate lights, and the other section goes down to the bottom of the boot to connect to the fuel sender, chassis fixings for earth and then between the spare and fuel tank to the rear lights.
Not an S3, but would think it would be similar.
Cheers,
Colin.

I agree with Colin.
As further confirmation you should find that the plywood boot floor panel (if you have it) has a cut-out in the front left corner to clear the loom and the battery earth cable where they run down to the boot floor.

On my S3 Coupe, the cables do not exit the sill and go to the floor, but rather continue up along the
turret and exits into the boot area.

It amuses me how these cars are so different. I've just re-made my rear loom (1972 Sprint) which also goes up over the area of the left suspension but this is a single loom from the bulkhead.
I've been flicking through Mr Bucklands book and it is definitively stated that the demister outlets from the heater should be at the rear of the unit, mine are at the front and I can not see that there would be sufficient space for them to be at the rear. Elan ownership is always entertaining .... And frustrating

Interesting, that route did not occur to me. One of the obvious problems of buying a box of bits is that I have no idea how they go together! I will check it out tomorrow. In that case, does anyone know what the line of screws in the rear bulkhead are for? They run diagonally across the bulkhead from the lower bottom of the door rear edge to the top of the rear of the transmission tunnel, only on the passenger side. I thought they were for P clips to hold the wiring in place.

Cheers.
