Fellow BT worker here too John, I remember lacing cables and the fabulous Clove Hitch knot to finish off.
Cable lacing was a work of art if done properly :-)

I've done time at Yarnfield too. Got out across the fields after being snowed-in for two weeks of a six weeks course. M6 was blocked by lorries with frozen diesel.
