Ignition switch connections

PostPost by: sprint4dm » Fri Mar 30, 2012 12:23 pm

can anyone help, I know it's an old topic but please read on.

On the back of my ignition switch (71 sprint ignition on steering column) the connections are numbered
1, single connection. 2, two connections. 3, two connections. and for some unknown reason 5, two connections
what happened to number 4 :?:

This is a Lucas part 157 SA Lucas UK

I need to know which wires goes to each connection for example single connection labeled 1 and work clockwise around the switch viewed from the rear

Many Thanks
Dave

If it's the same as mine the numbers don't match the wiring diagram.
It should be
1 white red
2 brown & brown/blue
3 white
5 white/purple

I bought a new switch from PM some time ago and have not yet fitted it. I also wondered what happened to #4 terminal. And it's definitely 157SA.
A picture - as confirmation.

Hi Brian

that's exactly the same as mine, is it just a cunning plan to create confusion?

Hi,
Can anybody confirm that the ignition switch Lucas 157SA (brown) shown in Brian's photo above is the replacement for the original switch (cream) shown in Alan's photo above which will fit my 72 Elan Sprint.

Thanks in advance

I would always check the actions using an ohm meter, first, before fitting.

There should be one common power in terminal, Which should connect to an Auxilariy terminal, for the Radio etc, When the key is turned left.

The common should connect to the main ign out terminal in the normal running position and should ALSO connect to the start solenoid terminal in the spring loaded start position.

I can confirm that the brown switch in Brian's photo fits the later steering column with steering lock - in my case an S130, but i believe the same as used in the Sprint.

Viewed from the rear, the connections are:-

Terminal 1 - to solenoid to operate starter motor

Terminal 5 - to all controls that operate with ignition switch in first position. e.g. windows

Terminal 3 - to ignition, coil etc.

Terminal 2 - live feed from solenoid, and feed to fuse box for anything permanently live e.g. interior lights, door puddle lights etc.

When operated the switch works like this:-
Position 1 - terminals 2 and 5
Position 2 - terminals 2, 5 and 3
Position 3 - terminals 2, 3 and 1

I haven't indicated wiring colours as i assume they are specific to the Sprint.

That will be a late safety mod, the idea is that if you leave kids in the car they can open the windows, but they can't trap their fingers in the window. I think all electric windows have to be done that way now.
