Suppresion plate

Came across this while trawling through ebay and never new it existed!

Were they fitted to all cars? Think I better have a dig about my boxes of parts, the PO kindly dissembled the car and then jumbled all the bits up in different boxes! :lol:

This plate and the one that covers the spark plug wells are shown in Section M of the Elan and +2 parts lists, on the radio page. The engine shield plate as shown on eBay is 26M0081 and the spark plug shield is A26M0736. The parts lists don't indicate when they were introduced but with "26" prefix in would have been early.

I went for a dig in my boxes and quicker than usual I stumbled across 2 of them!
Well at least I think they are the same, here's a pic

What do you think? The one on the left is a bit bashed and bent slightly, probably PO was planning on changing them.

I used to have a plate like that behind the engine, but I think it got 'lost' during one of the many engine-out activities.

I also had a top plate over the plugs, but that got lost earlier at one ov the Vegantune (Spalding) rebuilds.

Yes, the plug leads used to be routed around the back of the engine and through the rectangular hole at the back of the spark plug well. Those plates sandwiched down the back and an inverted shallow box clipped over the plugs. This was meant to reduce interference by the electrics on radio reception. Hopeless, I tried wrapping the radio in foil, even lead ! to no avail. You could listen to the radio when stationary or, on the move, slip in the 8 track.

Hi men,
Many (many!!) moons ago I had Elan + 2's. The s130 had the suppression plate behind the engine and I made up another which covered the plug well. Looked great (in S/S) but made very little difference to radio performance. My answer was to take out the radio and fit a new fangled radio cassette player by Phillips. Great it was but the selection of music was limited on Tape and the radio was still am/long wave etc and from memory was not FM. Got a bit fed up listening to Klaus Wunderlich and his organ music after a while.... :? :?

The answer now would appear to be the FM / ipod conversion offered to convert the existing std fit radio. I am going to go that route later this year. Probably a winter time job. In between med cruises etc... :lol: :lol:

Way back in 1983 when I had Vegantune (Spalding) do a complete refurb, I asked them to fit a new radio-cassette unit that I supplied. The radio did FM as well as AM and that's what I've used in the car ever since as the AM can only be really used when the engine is off.

My Aerial is at the back just over the battery. I've forgotten if that is the standard place.

It was the era of yobbos breaking into cars to steal car radios, so I had decided to make it near impossible to steal the radio. I had a new dashboard made which had only a small rectangular hole for the radio with two round holes at each side. The radio is behind the dash and can only be gotten out by taking the whole dashboard out.


It was also the ere of CB radio (remember that ? :-) So while having a new dashboard I had the glove box reduced in height and a small rectangular box below it, complete with polished wood door, to hold a CB radio. The CB Aerial was glued to the top centre of the windscreen outside and was coupled by radio wave to the inner portion glued top centre INSIDE the windscreen. The CB microphone could be unplugged & then the little door closed to hide the CB radio (which were also prime targets for thieves then).

Those suppression covers never really worked, too many leak paths for the EMI. Use modern suppressed leads and plugs and the problem will be gone anyway.

Might give that a try Gerry.. Any of the products look 'period'? Plugs not an issue..

By the way guys.. I am still using CB radio on MY Honda ST 1100 Pan European motorcycle. All of our club members have two way radio (CB) fitted..

Great for avoiding camera vans etc.. Would not be without it..

Alex, give Magnacor a phone. I've attached an extract from their catalogue which lists the Lotus twin cam (complete with the dizzy cap). I'm pretty sure this was what was fitted to my Twincam.

Anyone using and able to report an outcome?? Do they make the radio usable?

There was also a third aluminium plate attached behind the coil with a grounding strap on it. I have it as well as the original rear plate but the cam cover one is long gone. Don't have either fitted now. Within weeks of getting the car new I moved the coil from under the carbs. to the radiator blanking plate. This was a common mod. in the UK to avoid the fire risk from petrol dripping onto the coil underneath the carbs.
