Grease for windscreen wiper motor and rack

PostPost by: lotusfan » Wed Mar 17, 2010 6:58 pm

Can I call on your collective wisdom please? I am cleaning up and relubricating the windscreen (windshield) wiper motor and rack and need to know your recommendations for which grease to use. The original grease was thick dark brown stuff. In the past I have used Castrol LM in the wiper motor but it tends to run out over time and makes a mess.

What is the best/correct grease to use?

I've no idea, but I can tell you what I used when I rebuilt mine last year. Initially I covered everything in Castrol LM but the motor sounded like it was struggling and on cold mornings it really wasn't happy, only just about moving the blades. I stripped it down again, cleaned all the grease out and relubed it with a 50:50 mix of LM and gear oil. That (and careful alignment of the various bits of tube) made a big difference and its worked pretty well ever since.

Shell Retinax Grease LX or equivilent is correct or if you want a sticky oil use chainsaw oil if you want to play around.
