front repeater light

PostPost by: umbyfer » Mon Dec 28, 2009 1:46 pm

Elan sprint federal at the origin.
Regarding the front repeater lights (indicators) I have found somthing incorrect but I am not sure wich one is the incorrect.

Here some pictures:
right bulb is with only positive contact (the ground is fixed to the light plate and I thin k is not correct)
left bulb is with two contacts and the plate is with two cable and the grommet (inside the car).
both light plate are marked L691-692 Lucas L794-795

1. wich one is the correct?
2. where can I buy one?
3. I need also the cable grommet (inside of the car)
4. I have to replace the damaged chrome plate
5. any grommets between the amber lens and the light plate? I don't have any grommet

Hi,
My S4 lamps are original and are the same as your RHS - single contact with the earth connected to the body of the lamp. I think these are L691 and they were used on other cars of the period where the lamp would have earthed through the metal body without the need for external earth connection - not so on fibreglass bodies. Your LHS double contact lamp is I think L692 which uses a double contact single filament bulb and is probably not original but is perhaps more suited to be mounted on fibreglass as the lamp holder does not need to be separately earthed.

Lamps and spares are available from this supplier in the UK...

Hope this helps.

Hello Umberto,

The RH light is the correct one as a single element bulb is used. It could be that Federal cars were wired differently to make a twin element bulb work - of this I have no knowledge.

What connections do the rear repeater lights have?

There should be rubber gaskets in the housings.

New replacement light assemblies are readily available from many sources. If you buy new ones you need to have the amber lens L691 which is for the Elan. The one you show is L794 which is for the Europa. If it's any consolation, I have the Europa lenses on my car.

Umberto,

Because you have the small clear outer lights (I don't), I believe the right bulb is correct because it uses a single filiment bulb however the ground should be attached to one of the studs that attach the light to the car. The left bulb is a double filiment bulb and is for cars like mine that do not have the small clear outer lights. As you claim that your car is a Federal car, it's possible that the PO added the small clear outer lights. If so, then you can disregard this entire post! Also, there should be a rubber sealing gasket between the lens and the plate. Further, the lens you have is the same one that came from the factory on both my Elan and my Europa so it is correct. I hope this has been somewhat helpful.

Reading the list part book is written at page MD that the part for S4 is 036M6252: "flasher lamp 2 wire".
Both of my actual bulbs are with single filament (one with single contact and one with double contact)
I don't have any rubber sealing gasket between the lens and the plate but I have an internal chrome screen not indicated in the draw in the list part book.
Regarding the amber lens it is L794 and not L691 as indicated for sprint too.

How to proceed? not easy decision? Do I buy new lights L691?

thank you and regards,
Umberto

YES.

Knowing you, Umberto, you won't be satisfied if it's not correct.

The link given by Roger looks good to me.

thank you everybody for infos and links !
after having look a lot of pictures I realized that some federal cars are with Europa lens as mine and as Frank Howard wrote here.
Why are some cars with europa lens? Was it standard for USA market?
The answer is may be in the book Ean&Plus 2 of Paul Robinshaw & Christopher Ross.
At page 213 where there is the list part of electrical equipement it is written that the standard lucas 691 was for all model except North America where it was lucas 794.

If it is true this solves the mistery and clarify everything? Am I correct?

Umberto
