Is it an RVI or RVC tach?

They usually say either RVI or RVC on the face of the dial in small white writing.

If that's not there, what colour wires are coming from it?

The two wires from the induction coil go in series with the main power supply to the coil; not in the path from the coil to the points.

So one connects to the +ve supply from the ignition, the other to the coil +ve. Coil -ve goes to the points.

Connect the black wire to your Shapecraft alluminium hard-top; you will have no further problems.

26/R wiring is the very work of the devil, so I've read.

Ed
If the tach was a positive grd unit then you have to make a change to the inside of the tach.
I have done a few of these and found a site on the web which was a discussion on a sunbeam tiger converstion which was a great help. I will look to see if I can find it for you and post back later.

If you are using a dynamo you will need to change the polarisation of the field windings by holding a supply to the small f terminal of the dymamo for a second you will get a small blue flash , now you are neg earth the neg from the coil goes to the dist .
