lucas c42 dynamo .. will it fit?

PostPost by: RichC » Sun Aug 02, 2009 8:08 am

My old dynamo is knackered , like everthing else , & i was wondering if the jag C42 dynamo would fit?
i note it outputs 30amps which would mean the ammeter won't be upset .The more common C40L 25 amp output is usual, but they sem to be priced much the same.
i can't really justify changing to alternator setup at the moment 'cos she's positive earth & has few electrical ancillaries.
faffing around with changing polarity seems a bit unneccessary & she does have a large battery .
i'll have to postpone MOT from tomorrow but i'm still hoping for that old 'First Week of August , New Car On The Road ' feeling, especially as her 41st birthday comes up this wednesday!

Hi Rich

More bad luck :(

The dynamo is pretty basic when you take it apart; what is Knackered?

Overhaul kit is pretty cheap = http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/-Overhaul-kit-for ... ynamo,1960>>_W0QQitemZ400064776219QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090731?IMSfp=TL090731168004r37070

Ebay Item number: 400064776219

(links do not always work here)

?10.99.

Jason

PS

Swapped the spacer just now, not tried it yet as the neighbours have their windows open.

So? ......... they'll certainly close them fast enough !

Kinda like lighting a bar-b-q late afternoon, then popping upstairs, looking
out the window and watching all the girls come out to get their washing in.

You guessed it ........ they don't speak. We just pass in the street like the proverbial ships in the night !

Can't wait to fire up the new monster engine.
(wonder what time the little kids are just getting to bed ?)

Ho Ho.

Regards,
Stuart.

Mmmm, don't really want to upset the neighbours just now as my house is on the market.

If I am to get that double garage in this market neighbourly disputes is not something buyers are looking for.

I'll wait for a rainy day, no rush :)

brushes and commutator are ok - it looks OK with an internal inspection but there's no life ..
i've tried flicking it to make sure polarity is right and you'd expect it to turn into a motor when doing so but i get nowt

Rich, a bigger dynamo will load up the drive belt. How's your water pump changing skills?. Have you considered a change to an alternator?

yes gerry I've considered it but rejected it for now 'cos i'm +ve earth and it's too much hassle ( rev counter and ammeter 30 amp max showing & rejigging battery terminals ) esp as i've got a big battery & being an early +2 v few ancillaries to power up.
interesting point re resistance on fanbelt, do you really think it will have any effect?
