using a handheld tach

Hi all,
This seems like such a stupid question but I just can't seem to get my head around positive earth wiring.
I have a 65 elan that is positive earth and has been fitted with electronic ignition. I would like to synch/tune my carbs and tried to hook up a multimeter/tach. The manual says to to connect one lead to the ignition coil (- terminal) and the other to ground (this is for a negative ground system of course). How should I hook up for a postive ground system? Every thing I have tried fails.
Thanks
Robb

Robb,
Keep the rpm meter's polarity correct but try connecting the negative cable to the + terminal of the coil. You are attaching to the 12 volt supply side of the coil's primary circuit is all. The + side is the terminal connected to the dizzy and that's the side that has the voltage and current cycling and that's what the rpm meter detects.
