Oil pressure gauge connection

PostPost by: fatboyoz » Thu Jun 11, 2009 11:49 pm

Hi All,
Just like to confirm that the gauge end of the oil pressure line is sealed with a very small fibrous washer and that the engine end has nothing?
Thanks,
Colin.

Hi Collin,
As far as i know that is correct. In this way i't is on my car.
At the engine side it is a conic fitting and on the gauge side it is flat with a little O-ring.

Thanks Marten,
Fibrous washer or rubber O'ring.
Thanks,
Colin.

I used a oil lasting O-ring.
With 40 to 60 Psi and a smal leaky fitting it is possible after a longer time that the oil reaches the Gauge and dissolves the O-ring. It gives a mess on your pants.

The engine end is conventional 1/8 BSP in which the fittings themselves make the seal without an intermediary gasket. The gauge end is a slightly odd 1/8 BSP arrangement in which both fittings have planar mating surfaces requiring a washer-like gasket. I have seen different materials used. Moss Motors sells leather washers for this application.

Thanks Marten and Russ.
Now that you mention a leather seal Russ, I seem to recall one of these being fitted when I pulled it apart all those years ago. A friend has donated a flat rubber washer from his Mecedes, pneumatic suspension rebuild kit. I'll see how that goes.
Colin.
