Windshieldd Wiper Motor Mounting

PostPost by: kcrossle » Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:25 pm

If I remember correctly the windshield motor is mounted such that it is about 1/2 inch or so above the body immediately below it.

Anyone have a more precise measurement?

Thanks

Keith,
I'll get dimensions from mine tonight and post an image if I have enough light.

Keith,
I have attached a photo of the wiper motor in my +2 and a sketch of the hole locations. The wiper motor location is actual established by the piece of bundy tubing that carries the toothed cable from the motor to the first wheel box. Do you have this piece of tubing? The motor bracket hole locations in my +2 are original but you can see that the motor does not sit perfectly in the bracket. The motor is cocked in the bracket a bit so that the bundy tubing aligns well with the fitting on the motor gearbox. The bottom of the motor housing is about 1 1/8" above the top surface of the footwell in my +2. I recommend you make a test fit-up before drilling holes.

Thanks Russ... that is a bit higher up than I thought it was. It looks as though it is just low enough to clear the bonnet.

The whole unit, including bundy tubes, is currently connected leaving only the vertical spacing in question. I have discovered it is a good thing to ask, even about things that don't seem to matter, because so many end up that they do matter.

I imagine one wants it up a bit to reduce the curve in the tube. Bob in PA sent me a photo where it appeared lower.

Keith,
I just remembered that when I first got my +2 the wipers worked very poorly. I found that water had entered the motor can and damaged the bearing at the bottom. After making repairs I drilled two small holes in the bottom of the can to let water escape and sealed the gearbox casting to the motor housing with RTV. I have not had a problem since then. You might want to consider this simple modification. Looking at images on this site I noticed that on RHD cars the wiper motor is mounted on the other side of the engine bay with the motor housing above the gearbox. Perhaps this is the intended installation and LHD cars are more prone to water intrusion into the wiper motor. (Gary Anderson will be laughing his butt off because I haven't had an engine or gearbox in my +2 for two years now so obviously I don't have problem with my wipers.)
