Does anyone know what type of dynamo (other than Lucas, obviously) should be on our cars? Is it a C40?

But unless you are trying to build a just-as-it-was car, forget about dynamos & convert to an alternator.
The dynamo was a frequent cause of problems in the early yours of owning my Elan. I often ran out of battery power & had to be push started by passing pedestrians.
Never had that problem since converting to alternator.

"had to be push started by passing pedestrians".
I found I could just manage it on my own, as long as the road was flat.
I absolutely agree Bill, dynamos are rubbish and best thrown away closely followed by the ever clicking control box.
Without doubt this combination was the biggest source of trouble in all my years of Elan ownership.
Every sort of failure you could think of from stuffed bearings and poled armatures to worn out brushes.
Best thing I ever did was bin it.
By the way, I'm pretty sure the dynamo was a C40L, as fitted to Triumph 2000s (?).
But I shouldn't tell you that or you might get another one.....!
Ralph.

For what it's worth in the deep recesses of my mind I'm sure I've seen alternators built into dynamos for those who prefer things as they were, maybe someone else can come up with the goods, website ,whatever?
