Sticky tacho!

PostPost by: sulzeruk » Fri Feb 09, 2007 5:04 pm

Finally picked up my plus 2 and have managed to get it started (after replacing a duff condensor!). Hoping all jobs will not be as much of a pain on it!
After getting it running, the tacho needle has gradually worked its way round the face and is sitting at the 4000 rpm mark with the engine off.
Any idea if the instrument is scrap or can I have it reconned?
Any help gratefully received!

Where do you live? In the US, Nisonger claims that they can fix and restore any Smiths instrument. Mine are headed there shortly for sprucing up and calibration.

I love the sound of a torque wrench in the morning. Sounds like... progress.

Hi,

there is a firm that will overhaul / upgrade your tacho for you. If you have the early RVI type then you should have it upgraded to the RVC type which is compatable with electronic ignition. I f you leave your tacho as the RVI type then if you use electronic ignition the tacho may well bounce about or not function at all.

The company is: Speedy Cables, Abercrave, Swansea. SA9 1SQ.
Tel: 01639 732213 Web site: www.speedycables.com

I was quoted ?50 plus carriage and vat only several weeks ago. Hope this assists, regards George...

Just to add to George's reply:

Speedy asked me (with standard ignition system) if I intended to fit an electronic system in the future. I said yes.

My tacho works fine now, on the original points-based system, but is future-proof if I wish to upgrade.

This was at no extra cost.

Regards,
Stuart.

You can also do the job youself.
If you can find a smiths tacho on Ebay that has the same rev range and needle sweep and is RVC you can swap the innards..
I did this successfully and it only cost me 10 quid for the tacho from ebay
