What a great post! I love my dynamo too, in the 40,000+ miles I have had the car it has required a spade connector and with a decent battery keeps headlamps, heater fan & wipers going at same time - when moving! I also run the fan belt really loose and the water pump I had fitted soon after buying the car has lasted that same 40,000 miles too.
If it helps I am using a toothed fan belt, a Gates Automaster 6273MC which is a bit longer than the standard belt and seems to grip really well even when loose. The first one lasted 10 years before it got shiny and started losing grip - I think it is compatible with some VW models if it helps find one.
I like to keep my car quite standard too and enjoy compensating for the old tech'.
Cheers,
Ian
