All I get is a click on the starter.

All grounds are ok. I will try and remember to get you the engine number and I need to send the paint code from the VIN plate to Andy.

HI all,
We are all set. I made the jumper, reinstalled the starter and all if fine.
Thanks to all for the help. It has been many years since I worked on an Elan and my age is showing. I just dont remember it all....all the time. But you all pointed me in the right direction. Thanks.

One issue with using a direct trigger connection to a pre-engage starter from the ignition swith is that the solenoid for many pre-engage starters draws a much heavier current than the original solenoid and this can lead to the ignition switch contacts over heating and buring out.

I use a small conventional 30 amp relay to take the load off the ignition swtich to the solenoid on my pre-engage starter

cheers

I had this exact problem a few weeks ago, and I have the normal inertia lucas starter. i was at a show and had to start the car to reverse into a parking spot. Click, Click, Click! Embarrassedly, the car had to be pushed into the bay. I then tried again, engine turned and it started, as it has every time since.

Baffled!

Hi Davidj,
I suggest you look at condition of Bendix and fit new one. Also check for wear in the Oillite Bush and fit a new one very cheap and easy to change.
