Turns out it was the battery in my case. Even though it shows 12.65 volts on the volt meter, and the same on all live points on the car, and the green battery condition indicator on the top of the unit says everything is ok, it lies.
Everything is fine, it hardly loses any charge after testing for almost a day yesterday, but as soon as you put any load on it, it fails. Must be a massive short inside when load added.
