Correct, Mark. On the parts diagram it looks like a cork gasket but it?s unobtanium. Instead, the parts suppliers will send you a length of rubber beading that you are supposed to fit on the lip of the backing plate. Utter nonsense. On my car it fell off the moment I tried to fit the cover.
So I?m going to make a proper cork gasket... if I can find the right material for the right price. I think this gasket is important because it should prevent fuel from dripping onto the distributor in the event of a backfire.

Ah, I didn?t know about the stickers. I mean I knew they existed but not what they said.
Guess I should use sealant then.
Except here you can see the airbox gasket: http://www.lotuselan.net/wiki/EJ_-_Engine_-_Airbox_%2B2
Probably for earlier cars.

Use whatever works
The metal side of my air box has been shaved away at some time in the past pethaps to gain clearance over the footwell (sprint) and is generally not that wide.
I'm not sure that cork would stay in place anyway given the width available.
It sounds as if the Hylomar gasket wasn't used on all engine types or models.
One of the posts mentioned a rubber gasket falling out.

Try a cork flooring tile.
