Pleased that the ignition circuit is back!
Your description of the behaviour of the warning light suggests that there is a connection to the interior lighting circuit somewhere between the (removed) master cylinder switch and the lamp itself as its actions mimic that of the ignition warning light ie battery on, 12v applied to one side of the lamp, lamp illuminates, ignition on, 12v applied to the other side of the lamp, lamp extinguishes. Trace the wiring and see what you find...

I've had no luck trying to trace that wiring, the two spade terminals coming from the loom at the r.h,end of the dash that the PO fitted pink/white and white are the same colours as the warning light ones by the master cylinder.
This under dash one is live when that warning is on.
I've pulled the bulb and run the engine and everything works as it should.Unless I try and pull the dash forward which I don't really want to do
So it's back on with the steering wheel and all the under dash trim and hope for the best.
