Elan S4 Battery Search

Looking back through older battery choice topic discussions it seems that the Odyssey PC680 and PC925 was a popular fit where a smaller and more modern battery was preferred. They are still available, and it's something I was considering for my S4 as it gets closer to being roadworthy. I would be interested in opinions from those that have used or still use them?
I believe that Stuart @69S4 had/has one on his S4.
Or has technology moved on again and there's something even better?

I have an Optima Red Top, part no 8020-164 model no. 35. I've had in my 1969 S4 for at least 15 years, probably close to 20 years. It is easily the best battery I have ever had. And I've owned this S4 for 50 years.
I drive about 5000 miles per year, not much at all here in the mountains of North Carolina in the winter. During that time I keep it on a battery tender, but it only barely loses any cranking power even without the tender. Spring, summer, fall, there is no need for a tender.
I use the original charging system - Lucas generator and standard voltage regulator and that will keep it in good shape.
It doesn't fit the original battery hold downs but you can make it work and it will stay in place even with spirited driving.
Get one, you won't be sorry.

I've had an Oddessy in my +2 for going on 10 years. I keep it on a tender just like Bob and my experience has been the same. Very happy with its performance. I also needed a battery for my Elan 1600. Went to the battery store and said I needed a Miata battery. Owner said no problem, needed to order it. $150, have it tomorrow, but suggested a lawn and garden battery, same size, sealed but had lugs, $50. Gave me some lug terminals to boot. I had made my cables from welding cable and had clamp on terminals so changing to lug terminals was no big deal. Going on 3 years now and very happy, especially considering price. I don't know if battery is the same in later Elans. Gary

I still do. It's been there at least 10yrs now and still working perfectly. If it ever does give up the ghost I'll have no hesitation replacing it with the same again. Obviously it's a lot smaller than the original so I had to make up a clamp to hold it in place but that was only a few strips of bent metal.
