Surely when the knob is off, the spring should be pushing the pin in as far as it will go, so it shouldn't fall out.
Indeed .... once it's assembled correctly. However, Bob's issue was the pin falling out while trying to install it and the spring clip to the shaft, with the switch in situ in the dash.

Ah so...
I think I would use a dollop of thick grease on the pin in such circumstances.
