Having had wiring changes made by fitment of an alternator I would check the integrity of the modifications.

Well guys, you were right it was an earthing problem. After much hunting and frustration my mechanic found a couple of wires behind the dash that had poor grounds- the bolts had worked their way out so no contact was being made.

Lesson learned about Lotuses and their quirks for a guy who has mostly worked on MGs and Triumphs over the years....

The bad Earth bolt will be the bottom right vertical bolt holding Body to Chassis.
Next to Headlamp Switch
