Looks like pinion is not enough teeth.

Just a thought, gears can be made to different pitches, and in imperial and metric pitches. Looks like your 9 tooth pinion could be the wrong pitch. What vehicle was it originally from, if modern Japanese it will be a metric pitch gear not imperial like the original Lucas one.
Reason I’m particularly aware of different pitches is from my RC cars, some have fine 64dp gears, some have coarse chunky 32 dp gears, and some have 48 dp gears, and some have metric 0.1 modulus gears, none are interchangeable although the metric and 48dp gears will engage and work for a short time before destroying one of the gears.

So just to follow on from this thread re starter motors. I got my engine back today fitted the 5 speed bellhousing and a gearbox case to check the exhaust clearance.

Anyway, I thought I would fit the brise starter motor and see what the engagement looked like. Fron the photos it appears that although it meshes very well and the depth of the contact area on the rig gear is very good, the depth of the engaged teeth looks to only engage around 50% of the ring gear.

Any thoughts on this.... see pictures below

That gear engagement is no good at all and will wear out your ring gear in about 5 minutes. Fit a new old stock / new original starter and away you go. So long as all electrics / engine / timing etc are in good order on a car, they work perfectly. I don't fit anything else on my cars.

I would have said it depth seems too low to me... you're in a better position moving it around to see where the contact point is with respect to the teeth during action,

You may want to double check with the manufacturer recommendations to be sure.

see for instance the circle showing where the force is applied (in your case it seems very close to the end of the teeth)

I’ll second the opinion of Leslie above, never had any problems with an original starter if it’s in good condition and the flywheel ring gear is in good condition and fitted correctly.

I actually removed this unit years ago because of the noise, I just thought while I could get a photo I would for the thread. Don’t worry, standard starter going on.

Thanks

Ps I might just ping Brise about this

Out of interest, does anyone know what pitch is used on the standard Lucas pinion? We know it should be 9 tooth but not seen the pitch specified anywhere.

No, don't know the pitch, but I'll ask Brise when I write to them.

cheers

ok it's me again and i've got a solution for those wanting to use a high torque starter but the 9 tooth pinion doesn't mesh.

I ordered a ten tooth pinion from ebay, the item was:

"Chrysler Valiant Dodge MOPAR N-O-S 10 tooth Hi Torque starter pinion gear

Will fit all Hi torque mini starters,
Suited to 122-130 tooth ring gear, so you can convert your 9 tooth Hemi 6 to a Small Block Big Block or Dodge Truck ring gear"

I'm guessing it's a standard Denso ten tooth pinion but i couldn't find a part number for that.
I had to enlarge the hole that the pinion sits atop on the starter body, but the pinion went on no worries (with help from a youtube video)
the engine turned over beautifully and sounded very happy while doing so.
so yeah there's the solution for a few of us.
